This book documents the creative process, the thinking, the observations, and backstory of the places, the people and the ecosystems of the Western Plains. It includes essays, quotes from research sources, and some of the ideas investigated throughout the two-year, on-farm and in-community residency that Goldsmith undertook between 2024 and 2026.
Guest essayists expand on ideas about the importance of soils, and the power of art to explore existential ideas within rural and regional communities, in Australia and abroad. The stories of the farm and the Maynard family, and the Wungunja Cultural Centre in Trangie, provide background to why these sites were chosen for the residency project.
Songs of Sowing and Reaping, the book, brings to life the people and places through photographs taken throughout the project by Goldsmith and photographer, Sally Pittman. There are also samples of the creative works that resulted from the residency, in photographic form and as QR codes to soundscapes. The book captures snapshots of a project that celebrates life in rural and regional communities, and most importantly, the rich, complex environments that these places are part of. It asks, ‘What does it take to be a good ancestor?’ so that future generations can know these places as home.
This book was made possible through a grant from the NSW Government.
